âHere you go, Mrs. McGuffin,â I said, setting down the Cheesy Steak Burger in front of the elderly woman.
She smiled up at me, warmly. âThank you, dear. I admire you so much, I have to say.â
âOh?â Heat flushed through my chest. I wasnât accustomed to compliments, particularly not ones that came out of the blue.
âWhy yes, I am. Youâve been through a lot lately, according to the gossip vine, that is, and I just admire how youâve got so much courage and drive to keep going. To keep smiling even while you serve burgers.â Joyce McGuffin looked over either shoulder. âEven when there might be a killer watching from the corners.â
The corner booth, ironically, was occupied by the terrible twins. The sight of them brought a grin to my lips. âThanks, Joyce. Would you like a refill on that milkshake?â
âThat would be heaven, thank you.â
I swept away her empty glass and left her to her burger and fears. Fortunately, I didnât have the time for eitherâthe burgers had given a whole new meaning to âlifetime on the hipsâ for me, and the murders, wellâ¦
âAnother choc shake for Joyce,â I said to Griz, who was positioned in her usual spot behind the glistening countertop.
âComing right up.â She got out her ice cream and her syrups, her cherries and her whipped cream canister and set to work.
I loved watching Grizzy compile a shake. There was something so satisfying about the way she did it. It was the same for Jarvis and his burgers. The care he took in assembling burgers brought the taste to a whole new level. It was what Jarvis and Grizzy loved to do, and that was what made it so special.
And what about you? What are you going to do once this is all over?
It was a question I hadnât fully examined yet, and it made my stomach do dances. What was I going to do now that I didnât have a job as a detective anymore?
The bell above the restaurantâs door tinkled, and I glanced at its reflection in the mirror that took up the back wall.
Mona Jonah had entered, carrying her usual leopard print tote handbag, her pink, glitter rimmed sunglasses still on her face.
The folks in the restaurant silenced, a few of them averting their eyes, while others peered at Mona over the edges of their magazines or newspapers.
âOh great,â Missi said, from the corner. âAnother ray of sunshine to brighten our day.â Missi and Mona were mortal enemies.
Mona ignored the terrible twin and ripped her pink sunglasses from her face. She cast an eagle-eyed gaze over the interior of the restaurant, and wherever she looked, people shrank away. Personally, I didnât get why everyone was so afraid of her. But then, she was the editor of the local paper and the head of the infamous Sleepy Creek Gossip Circle. Power scared people.
Mona tucked her sunglasses into a velveteen pouch then settled that in her handbag. She marched over to the counter and took a seat on one of the stools.
